Sweden seeks to steer EU onto energy-efficient path |

Sweden plans to step up Europe's energy-efficiency legislation as it takes over the rotating six-month EU presidency at the beginning of July. Sweden will be well-placed to push its vision on energy efficiency as it takes the EU helm in the midst of the revision of the EU's energy efficiency action plan. The Commission launched a public consultation on 8 June and plans to present a new plan in November. Read more here |

European Parliament call for zero energy buildings |

All buildings built after 31 December 2018 will have to produce as much energy as they consume on-site, says the European Parliament, amending the 2002 Energy Performanceof Buildings Directive. MEPs also call for more public investments in energy-efficient buildings. The legislative report was adopted by 549 votes in favour, 51 votes against and 26 abstentions. Competition Begins For Eco-Excellence In Homes |

A competition to design some of the most energy efficient eco homes in the UK, which can compete on price with the cost of building standard houses, has been launched by the Welsh Assembly Government and Blaenau Gwent Council in association with the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The winning designs will be built at The Works: Ebbw Vale by United Welsh Housing Association. Read about the competition here |

EU backs regional funding for energy-saving housing |

The European Parliament has approved changes to the regional development funding for energy efficiency and renewable energy investments in housing. Once in force, the new rules will allow all member states to use their allocations to co-fund projects like the installation of solar panels in housing, or retrofitting houses with wall insulation, double glazing and more efficient boilers. Heidelberg cuts CO2 emissions |

Heidelberg is at the forefront of environmental protection in Europe and serves as a good example to other cities. The municipality has cut CO2 emissions by over 15 000 tons per year in municipal buildings since 1993, a reduction by 35%. Read more here |
