In an interview released to Euractiv David Orr calls for a EU intervention to promote zero rate loans for energy efficiency investment in residential dwellings. Although it may be difficult to get all 27 Member States to agree upon a common rate, he argues, the EU may anyway give a signal stating such measures are acceptable.

Refurbishing buildings to Passive House standards can improve their energy performance by up to 95%, according to Saint-Gobain Isover. Data in an Isover guide to planning and realising the Multi-Comfort building of the future shows that upgrading insulation and alleviating thermal breaks in a private home and an apartment block brought similar, outstanding results. |

In Building Design on the 5th of January this year, sustainability expert Henrietta Lynch argues that evidence from Germany shows buyers are prepared to pay a premium for more environmentally friendly design: Each winter Passivhaus buildings all around Europe throw open their doors to allow visitors to experience these buildings first hand. I chose to visit a Passivhaus housing development on the edge of Frankfurt of terraced family houses. The development showcased robust build quality, with excellent overall layout and space provision. They were light and airy with large windows and a good internal environment. This project will see the homes being constructed to the world leading PassivHaus standard.
